Fredericksburg, Texas holds a special place in my heart. It’s where my husband and I got married almost 10 years ago! It’s a wonderful little town in the Hill Country of Texas and makes for the perfect weekend getaway. We have enjoyed returning over the years and will continue to do so. It’s always fun to try different places and see what’s new. Below you will find a list of some of our favorite places as well as our favorite little B&B.
Note: Check the hours of operation for all of the places listed prior to visiting as some are closed on certain days of the week or during certain times of the day.
Things to do
Shopping on Main – Main Street is full of wonderful shops and restaurants. We usually spend a few hours making our way through all the stores. There are plenty of restaurants on Main Street from which to choose as well as a cute ice cream shop and delicious coffee shop. The iced coffee is amazing. When we eat on Main Street, we usually just look at the menus outside of the restaurants and pick one depending on the wait time and the type of food we are in the mood for at the time. Some of the restaurants have live music.
Lady Bird Johnson Park Nature Trails – Walking along the nature trails at Lady Bird Johnson Park is a nice way to spend an afternoon, evening, or even an early morning. We randomly came across them while driving through the park one afternoon and decided to do a little exploring. The trails are tucked away and beautiful.
Luckenbach – You’ll want to experience a part of history and make the short 13-mile drive to Luckenbach. There you’ll find a tiny town with a cute general store, concert venue, and dance hall. If you can plan your trip around a concert at Luckenbach, I highly recommend attending one there. There’s just something about experiencing live music under the starry Texas sky at such a historic place where so many great musicians have played. While you’re there, don’t forget to take a picture in front of the post office sign, and of course, pick up a souvenir.
Circle E Candles – The Circle E Candles showroom is a fun place to shop and has a large selection of scents. Their candles are made with a blend of the highest-quality waxes and come in their signature square, heavy glass containers.
Wineries – During one of our trips to Fredericksburg, we visited local wineries with my husband’s family. We rented a van for the day and had a blast. There are also tour companies that provide transportation to and from many of the wineries. It’s a great way to travel and allows everyone to enjoy the day. Enchanted Rock – Located about 20 miles from Main Street, Enchanted Rock is a great place to explore, hike, and enjoy beautiful Hill Country views from atop the giant pink granite dome. We tent camped during our stay and had a great time!
Where to eat
The Peach Tree Restaurant and Gifts – This adorable restaurant is located inside a cozy cottage near Main Street. The Peach Tree has a delicious lunch menu and cute gift shop to browse through on your way in or out. Allow for extra time as it can get crowded.
Alamo Springs Cafe – We made the trip to Alamo Springs Cafe on one of our visits and are so glad we did. Located about 15 miles from Main Street, the beautiful drive alone makes for an enjoyable experience. My husband wanted to try their cheeseburger after seeing it on a list of “The 50 Greatest Hamburgers in Texas” in Texas Monthly Magazine. It’s a casual, little place and wasn’t crowded when we went. We enjoyed a wonderful lunch on the patio.
Hilda’s – We are always up for trying new Mexican restaurants, so when Hilda’s was recommended to us by locals, we gave it a try. Their food was fresh and delicious, and we especially enjoyed the chips and salsa.
Cabernet Grill – My husband reserved us a table at the Cabernet Grill to celebrate our anniversary during one of our visits. Ranked No. 2 on TripAdvisor’s list of restaurants in town, the Cabernet Grill provides an amazing dining experience. The food is some of the best we’ve ever had.
Where to stay
Chuckwagon Inn Bed & Breakfast – During our most recent trip to Fredericksburg, we stayed at the Chuckwagon Inn Bed and Breakfast. It is my favorite place that we have stayed at thus far. It’s rated No. 2 on TripAdvisor’s list of B&Bs in Fredericksburg, and for good reason. The fun, rustic decor is exactly what you would expect from a B&B in the hill country. The little guest house we stayed in was named Larry Bill’s Chuckwagon. It was cozy, comfortable, and clean, and the owners were so friendly and cooked a delicious breakfast for us.
